Crowns

Over time, our teeth weaken and become more susceptible to problems like decay, cracks, discoloration, and more. If we notice that a tooth is decayed, appears weakened, or is cracked, we may recommend a crown to prevent additional problems.

The process of placing a crown takes two to three visits. During the first visit, we will reshape the tooth to accommodate the crown. You will be given a local anesthetic before this part of the procedure so you do not experience any discomfort. Next, we will create a mold of the tooth and the surrounding teeth. We will then send the mold to a dental lab that will custom create your new crown to fit perfectly and match the surrounding teeth. Before you leave, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown to wear until your permanent crown is ready.

The crown takes about 2-3 weeks to make. At this time, you will have another appointment to place and fit it. You will again receive a local anesthetic to numb the area, and your new crown will be placed using a cement to ensure the tooth remains in place.

When you look in the mirror, you will see your smile is back to normal! Crowns typically last 10 to 15 years. You should care for it as you do your natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing.

Bridges

A dental bridge is a great way to replace missing teeth. With a bridge, we use your existing teeth to support a replacement tooth that fills the gap where your tooth is missing. The bridge consists of two crowns on either end and a pontic, which is the new tooth that replaces your missing tooth. Bridges are made from gold, metal, alloys, or porcelain to ensure that they are strong and durable.

The process of creating a bridge begins by creating abutments out of your existing teeth to support the bridge. We will need to recontour the existing teeth to provide a base for the bridge. After creating the abutments, we will make a mold of the area, which we will send to a dental lab. The lab will use the mold to create a bridge that fits properly and feels as close to your natural teeth as possible.

We will fit you with a temporary bridge while we wait for the lab to make your permanent one. The temporary bridge protects the abutments and the exposed gum areas and looks more appealing than having a gap in your smile. Once the permanent bridge has been created, you will have a follow-up visit to set it in place. We will place the bridge on the abutments, and your dentist will then use an adhesive to ensure that the bridge is securely set.

Your new bridge may take a little while to get used to, but after a few days, it should feel completely natural. You should eat soft foods for the first few days after having your bridge placed. After the initial phase, you will be able to eat whatever you want with no issues!

If you are missing a tooth, you should strongly consider replacing it. Besides the aesthetic disadvantage of missing a tooth, it can also cause structural changes to your mouth and jaw, making it difficult to eat or speak properly. Request an appointment today to restore your smile!
