Same-Day Crowns: From Damaged Tooth to Fixed in One Visit
Same-day crowns let you skip the temporary crown phase and the waiting period while a lab fabricates your permanent restoration. You come in with a broken tooth, spend about two to three hours in the chair, and leave with your permanent crown bonded in place — no second appointment, no worried calls when the temporary crown falls out while you’re eating.
How Same-Day Crowns Changed the Timeline
Traditional crowns require two separate appointments scheduled weeks apart. At the first visit, we prep your tooth, take impressions, and cement a temporary plastic crown over the prepared tooth. The impressions go to a lab where a technician hand-builds your crown over the next two weeks. You come back for appointment two. We remove the temporary and cement your permanent crown.
Temporary crowns cause problems. They pop off when you’re eating bagels or sticky candy. The cement holding them washes away gradually, letting bacteria seep in underneath. Some people develop tooth sensitivity or gum irritation around the margins.
Same-day technology eliminates that entire phase. We handle everything in one three-hour appointment using a computer and an in-office milling machine. You walk out with your permanent crown fully bonded and ready for normal use. Most people schedule these appointments for a morning or afternoon off work then go back to their regular schedule.
The Digital Process Step by Step
We start by prepping your tooth just like we would for a traditional crown. This means removing decay, shaping the tooth into a form that supports a crown, and smoothing all the surfaces. Once the tooth is ready, we use a digital scanner instead of impression trays. The scanner is a small wand that captures thousands of images as we move it around your tooth.
The images we capture combine into a 3D model on our computer screen. Using that model, we design your crown right there with the help of software that calculates the ideal specifications based on your other teeth and your bite. In about 15 minutes, we can design your crown, fine-tuning the shape and size to ensure it fits tightly against your gumline.
Once you are completely satisfied with the design, the computer sends it to our milling machine, which carves your crown from a solid block of ceramic. The machine uses diamond-coated burs to cut the crown, typically finishing in 10 to 15 minutes, depending on complexity. The raw milled crown comes out looking chalky and monochrome, but we stain and glaze it to match your natural tooth color before firing it in a small oven.
After glazing, we try the crown in your mouth and check the fit, bite, and appearance. Minor adjustments happen right there with polishing instruments. Once everything looks and feels right, we bond the crown permanently using a dental adhesive that creates a chemical bond with the ceramic and your tooth structure. The whole process takes two and a half to three hours from start to finish.
Benefits Beyond Convenience
The obvious advantage of a same-day crown is completing treatment in one visit, but there are other benefits too. Digital impressions are more accurate than traditional putty impressions because there’s no distortion from the material setting or getting bumped during transport to the lab. Better accuracy means a better fit, which translates to crowns that last longer and feel more comfortable.
You avoid the temporary crown phase entirely, which means:
- No risk of the temporary crown falling off during a meal or while flossing
- No sensitivity from a poorly sealed temporary restoration
- No embarrassment from a visible temporary crown that doesn’t match your other teeth
- No repeating the numbing injection at a second appointment
The ceramic we use for same-day crowns holds up well under chewing forces. Studies show similar longevity to lab-made crowns, which is typically 10 to 15 years with proper care. The material is strong enough for back molars and natural-looking enough for front teeth.
