What Is Root Canal (Endodontics)

Root canal is probably the most notorious procedure in dentistry and the most common endodontic procedure. When a tooth becomes infected, it is usually related to the nerves in the root of the tooth. If left untreated, an infection can develop into an abscess, which is a much more serious problem.

What To Expect

We will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic to start the procedure. Your dentist will then drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal. They will then remove infected tissue and clean the canal.

After the infection has been removed, your dentist will fill the space with a sealant called gutta-percha. We highly recommend that a tooth be fitted with a crown after undergoing a root canal to improve its appearance and increase the likelihood of a successful recovery.

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

The benefits of the procedure and advances in dental technology have made root canal therapy easier and more comfortable for patients. Local anesthetics and proper pain medication allow us to perform the procedure with little to no pain in most cases. There may be some soreness after the procedure, but that is normal. Over-the-counter painkillers are usually enough to manage any discomfort afterward, but your dentist may prescribe additional pain medication if you need it.

The root canal procedure will relieve you from the discomfort caused by the infection, allowing you to enjoy all the foods you love without any pain from heat, cold, or biting too hard. If you are experiencing tooth pain, call us today.
